My wireless connection

Asked by Eggie

Recently, I have tried installing Linux Ubuntu onto my Dell Inspiron 1501 Laptop. Everything in the download went smoothly, except for when I tried to connect to the internet on Ubuntu. The wireless card my computer uses is a Dell Wireless 1490 Dual Band WLAN Mini-Card. I didn't know if this card isn't compatible with ubuntu or anything so any sort of help will suffice.

Thanks,

Joe

Well... the real question is does Ubuntu detect the card...

If you go to the upper panel in the right hand corner there should be a picture of two computers. If you click on this you should get an option to connect to any available wireless network. If you see yours there do ahead and click on it.

If you do not have any option to connect to a wireless network then your card is not being detected properly.

Have you already tried if there are some proprietary driver using the menu: System->Administration->Driver Hardware ?

Can you copy and paste here the result of:

lspci

command (lspci is lower of LSPCI)

Thank you

I can't copy lspci because I don't have an internet connection with ubuntu. But no there are no proprietary drivers using the menu.

It appears as though you do need to load a driver for your wireless card.

Here is a link to a thread that got one working:

http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-434946.html

Good luck - I hope that works for you.

This worked well, until i needed ndiswrapper.. It came up with the error saying it couldn't find the package, and I don't have a ubuntu disc.

Eggie:

If you have a place to access the internet via an Ethernet cable I would try either of those tutorials using that.
