Atempting to install hardy on Acer Aspire 1350 getting no joy

Asked by 2B

Hello,
I am attempting to install Hardy on an old Acer Aspire 1350:

AMD 2.4ghz
700+ mgb ram
20gb hdd
Intel graphics unsure what spec

I originaly used the normal install disk 32bit. At the language selection screen I selected install. The Kernel began to load but went to the command prompt. I rebooted and tried again in Safe Graphics Mode the same thing happend. I retried it again with a copy of Gutsy and got the same problem.

Next I downloaded the alternate cd and booted that, this time the kernel loaded but the screen was so distorted it was impossible to read. there is no safe graphics mode on the alternate cd.

I know it is possible to install form the command line, if I do this will the I be able to use a gui? if I am able to use
a gui how do i install from the CL?

Hy 2B,

please give it a try with the "load into RAM" option. If you fall back to the shell again type the following:

1] sudo su
2] gdm

I tried the Live Disc option if that is the same as load in to ram which I assume it is.

The progress bar showed for a v.long time then just as it seemed to be loading GDM it fell back into a text base loading screen and froze.

I also tried the install option which brings me back to the shell and i tried the above commands; the screen flashed several times like it was trying to load but always returning to the shell. i tried the commands again and got a responce that GDM was already running.

Ive also tried navigating to the live session desktop and running the install program using the 'sh' command. but got nothing.

could it be a problem with my hdd, currently there is v.little space on there i was planning to format it at the partition manager screen. I can't see why this would be a problem though.

No, load into ram is an extra option a bit more on the bottom in the menue or in the bottom bar represented by an "F"-Key -- I cannot reember. :-(

I think though that you really have trouble with gdm and probably your graphics adapter. I don't think it has something to do with your HSS since there's actually nothing written or read to/from it.

Best thing is to borrow a garaphics adapter from a friend and retry. Also enter "uname -a" in your shell and give me that information. Also check out what your "old" Acer Aspire 1350 has installed in it. Compare every single piece of hardware (mainboard, CPU, RAM, gap, etc...) with the hardwarebase on [http://www.ubuntuhcl.org/].

Good Luck!
