Ubuntu Hangs on Installation.

Asked by Ordinary12

I burned a copy of Ubuntu Live CD and began booting to it from my computer. Every distrobution of Linux I've tried have all frozen at various points of installation on my computer. Ubuntu got the furthest of them all so far. Everything seemed to be working fine and I was able to see the wall paper and mouse pointer come up before the whole system decided to freeze on me. Does any one know what this about and how to fix it?

Gigabyte K8NSNXP Socket 754
Sempron +3400 2Ghz
XFX GeForce 6600GT
2GB Ram
Creative X-Fi sound card

I've read in several different areas that Linux has trouble with Nvidia drivers and this may be the cause. If this is the case then how can I insert a copy of the Nvidia drivers compiled for Linux by the Nvidia Corporation into the boot sequence of the Live CD? If this is not the case then I would appreciate any help you can give me. Please send responses to my e-mail account because this was too difficult to get to and I doubt I'll be able to find it again.

What version of Ubuntu are you using?

Also, are you only wanting to run the live CD or is it possible for you to do an install?

I was using the newest version of the Ebuntu Live CD, 6.10. I'd like to install Ebuntu onto my computer but if I can't even get into the Live CD version how can I expect to install the ful version?

What you would want to do is try the Alternative version of Ubuntu. If you look at the following page under the Download the Alternative CD section, it will let you know what you need. This is more along the lines of a 'regular' install cd as it is not a 'live' cd.

Just change the --spalsh option to --nosplash during the install, the system will appear to hang for about 5-10 mins depending your hardware. Do not worry when the screen goes black for several minutes, the OS is running up without the splash screen. You can do this from the Live CD using the F6 option and modify the line accordingly. Make sure your cursor is back at the end of the line before continuing (i.e. pressing Enter) and use it like that or select the SAFE-VGA mode from the relevant menu.
