Cannot install ubuntu 8.04

Asked by s chanda

Hi,
I have a Sempron 2.2 GHz processor, 2GB of Ram, 160GB SATA hard drive. When I run the live cd, I select the install Ubuntu option. But a few minutes later, rather than running the installation process I get the busybox console with an initramfs prompt. So how can I install Ubuntu without going through busybox.
Thanks

I'd suggest downloading the "Alternate" cd by ticking the checkbox before downloading from

http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

This is more likely to install.

Hi,
Thanks Tony for the tip. I tried the alternative CD. When I run it, it says," No common CD-ROM drive was detected." Also it does offer me to load drivers from a floppy drive. The installer is running from the CD-ROM drive, so how is it possible that the CD-ROM drive cannot be detected?
 Any help will be appreciated.

Please check the md5sum here the howto https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto

of your downloaded .iso file and compare with http://releases.ubuntu.com/8.04.1/MD5SUMS

Please try to burn your cd at 4x then recheck the md5sum of burned cd

to burn it, here the official howto -> https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto

- then to be sure your ram is ok, boot from Ubuntu live cd main menu and at first showed menu, select the item "Memory test" to test your pc ram memory

watch this video that show howto install Ubuntu: http://screencasts.ubuntu.com/Installing_Ubuntu_with_Windows_Dual-Boot

- if something go wrong at startup of Ubuntu live installation cd you can put useful kernel boot parameters as showed here
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootOptions

Hope this helps
