Cant get a display

Asked by MikeSz

Hope someone can help with this!

Ive tried installing Ubuntu versions 6.06 and 6.10 and cannot get a desktop. On booting from the CD, I get the option to install and follow the system through etc however when it comes to loading up what should be the desktop I get a series of thin gree/yellow lines down my screen. the computer continues to work as I can hear the little jingle telling me that it is now working so I know the system has not crashed. I have tried the alternative CD and gone through a text install and same thing. I have tried a different monitor just in case and it doesnt make any difference.

My system is an AMD 64 3700+ on a Gigabyte K8N Nforce 4 motherboard. I have just under 2Gb of ram (1.8 something meg) and an Asus 512Mb GeForce 6600 PCI-E grphics card. I have two 200Gb ATA drives and I know I dont have any problems with either of them as I have been running the mini edition of Sabayon 3.2 with no problems.

Just to clarify however, the ISO images I have downloaded and burned have all been for the AMD 64 version. Can I use the normal PC version or are you supposed to stick with the AMD 64?

Does anyone have any idea how I can solve this problem as I really want to use Ubuntu!!!

Hi,

You can try to use the alternate installation CD (http://www.mirrorservice.org/sites/releases.ubuntu.com/edgy/ubuntu-6.10-alternate-amd64.iso.torrent), this installs it from the command line so you should be able to install it at least. Once in there you'll probably have to install the Nvidia drivers (I guess, though I'm not sure).

Try that and see what happens, and then we'll deal with the problems as they arise. :)

Cheers,
Matt

Thanks everyone who emailed me - Ive now resolved it. It was suggested I try FB=FALSE VIDEO=VGA16:OFF as a boot option from the CD - this has worked a treat and I am now fully immersed in Ubuntu!!!

Thanks again
