Actually what do you mean by these

"run firefox but it's not in synaptic packages or theres no icon for it in the appllications menu."

You can install firefox just by typing this in terminal

sudo apt-get install firefox

e.g. Firefox 2.0 is in synaptic packages and in the applications menu.

If i do the install in the terminal, where does firefox appear. i.e how do i get to it??

It's in the Applications menu, Internet.

The line below in a terminal window (Applications menu, Accessories) will get you the latest versions of all installed software (including firefox which you have installed with sudo apt-get install firefox).

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

I know but that firefox 2.0.
Let me start angain...

I've downloaded firefox 3.0.1.

It downloads then the window appears to EXTRACT.

I'm kinda lost from here...

I've tried extracting it, then gone into the extracted firefox folder and RUN firefox. It worked and i was using 3.0.1 but i don't know how to install it properly.

The only way i can access it is buy going FILESYSTEMS»tmp»firefox then double click on firefox file and choose run in terminal.
I've restarted my laptop and now i can't find the folder.

What i want is for it to be exactly like firefox 2.0 i.e. for an icon to appear in applications menu so i'll see firefox 2.0 icon and firefox 3.0.1 icon.
e.g.
Like if you install firefox 3.0 grand paridiso in synaptic packages. A globe appears in applications»internet. Then if i want to remove it i go back into synaptic packages...

I'm baffled
Thought it would be nice and simple like that...
Download... click on install... and done... plz help

For more information on downlading and installing a new version outside the package manager, please read the following page:

Well...

"It downloads then the window appears to EXTRACT." -- Sounds like it's an archive and not installed via Synaptic. Remember to install packets with appropriate rights if they require so.

"but i don't know how to install it properly." -- Don't install any software from external when there's a version available via the software Install/Uninstall utility. some packets there may be outdated but they are proven to work as exprected.

"The only way i can access it is buy going FILESYSTEMS»tmp»firefox then double click on firefox file and choose run in terminal. I've restarted my laptop and now i can't find the folder." -- LOL! The first thing is NEVER to install your OWN software in /temp but actually in "/usr/local/share/" or if its only one file in /usr/local/(s)bin/. The reason why your firefox is gone after reboot is the grace period of temporary files on your system which is either reboot event or ONE day. Now you see why it's bullshit to install ANYTHING you wanna use longer in /temp or install anything in there at all. ;-)

"What i want is for it to be exactly like firefox 2.0 i.e. for an icon to appear in applications menu so i'll see firefox 2.0 icon and firefox 3.0.1 icon." -- Uiiiiiiiii - Boy! I like helpin' but you have to LEARN things on your OWN! First enter the following command into a shell: "sudo chown YOUR_USERNAME:YOUR_GROUP -R /usr/share/applications/". Then modify the files in that directory by using a texteditor. Especially the "Categories=...." thing is important. Learn by looking in other files.

Ok I won't read your last post any further since I think that someone who doesn't know the basics about operating systems doesn't require two different versions of one and the same browser at all. Sorry, but you'd rather use Opera 9.5 and quit all the other install-hell-mess. If you're in Webdesign also install IE6 via Wine if you like to.

Leave it to Linux users to start talking before they listen. They guys is asking about 3.01!!! That is a pre-release on Ubuntu. Simply firing off the Update Manager isn't going to get Firefox updated to 3.01.
See: http://blink4blog.blogspot.com/2008/07/where-is-firefox-301-in-ubuntu-linux.html

As a follow up to the *helpful* last posting...

Firefox 3.01 is in the repositories now for Ubuntu 8.04.
Using Synaptic & Update Manager for software updates is better than downloading packages yourself as any issues with dependencies will not occur.
