Can you post the output of:-
lshw -C multimedia
usually that gives the make/model of the sound card in the system especially if the sound card is onboard.

I can't seem to locate any audio information. I installed Ubuntu Hardy Heron and Kubuntu yesterday. Before that it ran OS X 10.1.4 and had sound.

Thank you for your help.

From the output it does seem that there isn't any sound card in the system, do you remember the make/model of the sound card in the PC if possible?

I can't seem to find that information. It's the integrated soundcard that comes stock with an imac ppc g4.

Check your BIOS to see if the sound chip is actually enabled.

How do I check BIOS?

...and to enable sound chip if it is disabled?

Thanks

When you enable your computer and the ram counts up (part of the POST) you can press either DEL or F2 then you'll enter BIOS. In case you see only a logo seconds after enabling the computer you'd press repeatedly one of the aforementioned keys to reach BIOS.

In BIOS itself you'd have a look on the upper corner of our screen and figure out what kinda BIOS you have (probably Phoenix or AWARD) and consult google then for specific details. Try someting like "+BIOS +Phoenix +sound" in Google or goto [http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bios-info.de%2F4p92x846%2Ftitel.htm&hl=de&ie=UTF8&sl=de&tl=en]. Here you can find everything you need. ;-)

Unfortunately I do not have the powers to change the state of this question to SOLVED, EXPIRED or INVALID. Someone here at Launchpad either grant me that permission or simply apply the change in state to this question, please.

Can you help with this problem?
