Kubuntu 8.04 -I want the sphere!

Asked by mcneely.brandon

I just got Kubuntu (8.04) and I want the sphere. Now, I have the repositories added for hardy main (through launchpad). Can someone tell me which packages I need to install and how to configure them so that compiz works.
I have amd 64 version and a nvidia geforce 6100 g-card. I have been trying this all day. I am a NOOB and just want some help!

Thanks,
Brandon

Ok, I did what was suggested. Compiz is now running, but I can only get it to show 2 desktop panes on the pager and no cube. I try to change the amount of desktops settings/compiz-settings-manager/general/desktop size, and it will not let me move it from 1. So, I went to system setings/desktop/multiple desktops and changed it there to 4, but when I click 'apply', it goes back to 1. Any suggestions?

Here are the common shortcuts:

SUPER+SHIFT+DRAG LEFT MOUSE = draw fire
SUPER+SHIFT+C = clear fire
CTRL+ALT+DRAG LEFT MOUSE = rotate cube
CTRL+ALT+LEFT ARROW = rotate cube
CTRL+ALT+DOWN ARROW = flat desktop
SHIFT+ALT+UP=initiate window picker
CTRL+ALT+DOWN=unfold cube
ALT+TAB=window switch
SUPER+TAB=flip switcher or ring switcher depending on which is enabled.
ALT+F7=initiate 'move windows'
SHIFT+F9=water effect
SHIFT+F10=slow animations
CTRL+ALT+D=show desktop

For Grouping and Tabbing:
SUPER+S=Select Single Window
SUPER+T=Tab Group
SUPER+Left=Change Left Tab
SUPER+Right=Change Right Tab
SUPER+G=Group Windows
SUPER+U=Ungroup Windows
SUPER+R=Remove Group Window
SUPER+C=Close Group
SUPER+X=Ignore Group
hold the super button then select the windows you want to group and then hit super+g

also You can add new shortcuts.. all that you have to do is just you can select one of the plugin(double click on it) and in actions tab of the plugin, under bindings you can change the shortcuts. You can even add a screen edge as a binding so that when you move your mouse cursor to screen edge(say top left) compiz will execute the particular action. It goes really nice with expo plugin. have a great time with compiz fusion!
(the one with windows logo on it (in some keyboards along with windows logo "start" is printed)
This is the super key..

You may also have a sphere instead of a cube.

Goto System->Administration->Software Sources
Click Third party software tab and add this: deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/compiz/ubuntu hardy main
Then close the window and press Reload when prompted to. You will be notified by update manager that there is an update for compiz. Install the update and reboot your computer.
Then goto Advanced desktop effects settings and you will have a Cube reflection and deformation and 3D Windows plugin there.

Regards.

I have already done this and have compiz:1.7.6. I have the cube and can rotate it and use shift switcher and expo. but it is not even a cube, there are only 2 sides and when I change the amount of desktops, it will only change back to 1 when I click apply or back. (see previous)

I'm really stumped on this!

I really appreciate the help!

Thanks,
Brandon (noob on a mission)

Change no of workspaces

First, right-click on your desktop and select Configure Desktop > Multiple Desktops and set Number of Destops to 1
Second, in CCSM select General Options > Desktop Size and set Horizontal Virtual Size to 4 and Virtual Vertical Size to 1

I already have those plugins. I just changed from ubuntu to Kubuntu. I had it working on the gnome version with the sphere that looked like the planet earth. it was pretty cool. I can't get the number of desktops to change from 1 although it acts as if there are 2 because I can flip the desktop over but it is only 2 sided. I see the skydome and everything.

thanks,
Brandon

P.S. I changed to kde because in the gnome version Nautilus would keep taking over every time I rebooted. I would then have to enable compiz again and reconfigure my settings everytime.

You, my friend, are 'The Man'.

I have been to that selection about 12 times and never tried to change the virtual sizes, only the number of desktops. Thank you so much!

Now I will reboot and see if everything is like it was when I logged out. (but that would be another story) lol...

Thanks,
Brandon (very satisfied NOOB)
