You can use the tar.gz format.

Ah yeah and if you wanna install packets with ease you may want to try .deb files and load them in your APT Packet Installer maybe. It checks all the dependencies. If I were you I'd rather stay away from software packed in .gz archives. It's actually a bit more complicated to keep your system clean with this since I'm sure you're not that high level. ;-)
