Ubuntu

would ubuntu work with any brand of pc out of the box? or would i hae difficulties getting drivers?

i'm going to get a laptop and i would like to run ubuntu on it.. but i would like to know if i have to go for a particular brand. don't want to buy anything and than find out that i cant get drivers for the machine.

You can find out without actually installing Ubuntu by running it from the "live" desktop CD.

You could download and burn to CD then ask the shop assistant to boot from that to confirm support?

Alternatively, it's worth searching through the Ubuntu forums for the laptop model to see if anyone has been having any issues with it.
