Slow Boot, 7+ minutes

Asked by Frans

I placed a Question (38117) 2 weeks ago and have received no response, am I doing somthing wrong? Should I have used a different way of wording my question?
If I can't resolve this problem there seems little point in trying to continue.

Please try a more verbose boot startup output messages.

Edit the file /boot/grub/menu.lst and add acpi=force to the default kernel parameter

Please open a Terminal from the menu Applications->Accessories->Terminal and type:

sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Search the row

# defoptions=........ your options

and remove the "quiet" and "splash" parameter

save and exit

then type:

sudo update-grub

Reboot your pc and you will get more warning and messages at startup so you can investigate your slow boot issue.

Hope this help

Then you can get more messages by edit the /etc/default/rcS file

Please open a Terminal from the menu Applications->Accessories->Terminal and type:

sudo gedit /etc/default/rcS

and change the row

VERBOSE=no

to

VERBOSE=yes

Hope this helps

Thank you both for your replies.Sorry, but this writing block is a this colmn on the left side of my page. Makes it very difficult to see what I write.
To TuniX12.
Cpu is Mobile Intel Celeron processor, speed 2.00 GHz
Installed memory is 240mb.
To "marcobra'.
I Have tried several times and failed. But first another problem may be compounding it, the cursor is very 'jerky' when moving across the screen, and when typing I sometimes have to tap the keys 2 or 3 times before the letter appears on the screen.
I have tried what you said and 1 of severalthings happen.
When I get thro the Applications- Accessories- Terminal, it comes up with "frans@frans-laptop:~$"
When I type the "sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.1st" (enter)it either goes to 'sudo:geti: command not found' or changes to what looks like a word proccessor sheet called *menu.1st (/boot/grub)-gedit'
It then asked me for my password, I peress enter but nothing happens.
I am sorry but I am not a computer fundi.
Thank you for your time. Frans
