Need help uninstalling Ubuntu from iBookG4

Asked by jeffcthompson

I recently installed Ubuntu on my iBook G4 (after I destroyed a hard drive trying to install it on my family's brand new Toshiba satellite laptop) and now I need to uninstall it.

I am giving my brother my iBook and he has asked that I restore the system without the Ubuntu partition I created last week (also, I had a great deal of trouble getting the Ubuntu to work with the iBook trackpad, CD eject key and wireless card).

If someone would be so gracious as to assist me in the uninstallation and unpartitioning, I would greatly appreciate it.

Kindest regards,
Jeff T.

Jeff,

Installing an OS (Operating system - like OS X, Linux and Windows) is very unlike installing some guest software (like FireFox, or Office) in a host OS. The OS becomes a new host in its own right. You cannot "uninstall" Ubuntu and "unpartition", so much as repartition and install another OS (in this case a version of OS X - do Apple give OS installation CDs with their hardware?).

With regards to the trackpad, eject key and wireless card, did you request support for those, or try the helpful folks on the freenode #ubuntu irc channel? You may be able to get some joy with the hardware there - there are people who are pretty willing to try and help out those new to Linux get up and running.

The eject key may be being overridden by the device still being mounted - in Linux (including Ubuntu) you need to unmount it first. On Ubuntu this can be achieved via the right-click context menu on the device icon, and clicking "unmount this device" before ejecting.

Cheers,
Danny

I do have the original OS disk from Apple. So, would I simply need to
reinstall that disk and follow the steps for repartitioning the space. Or,
are there other steps necessary?

Thanks.
Jeff

Jeff,
Yes- you would simply need to reinstall that disk - although I will point out that unless you had backed up your work, the hard drive is likely to have been erased at each OS install and will no longer contain your work. This is true of any OS reinstallation and is not an Ubuntu defect.
