You can manually add entries using system, preferences, main menu. You can also launch any program from command line by typing the program name.

hi,
please in this case how will it be done and why doesn't it appear in sound and videos but in synaptic package manager only?

It doesn't appear automatically in sound and video because it's a manually installed package - so you'll have to manually add an entry to sound and video. You can do this in system, preferences, main menu, Click on sound and video on the left panel - then click new item. it's an application name RealPlayer, command realplayer - or whatever command launches it.

hi Yeshara,
thank you for the help, i typed in all the words as above but left the comment section blank and it now appears in the list but not with the realplayer icon and when executed gives Failed to execute child process ''realplayer'' (No such file in directory)
also there is 'Browse' next to the command part which leads into the home folder. what do i do with that?

you can browse to the location of the realplayer provided icon - or look in /usr/share/pixmaps. The error means realplayer is not the correct launch command, or it's not installed to a standard directory. Where did the binary install? /usr/bin/RealPlayer? You can likely find the correct command by looking through the documentation provided with the package you downloaded - a README, or install file.
