Install 8.04 onto VMware VM --> no GUI

Asked by Frank Revi

I have a Win2003S box running the (free) VMware server. I am trying to install Ubuntu server 8.04 onto a VM. Ubuntu installs successfully, but I only see a text mode interface. How can I install (or start if it's already there somehow) the Ubuntu GUI? There were no options that I could select during installation to install the GUI.... Thanks.

Initial Ubuntu server installation doesn't include GUI. If you'd like to install Gnome GUI, just type: sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
But you should know that Ubuntu server edition with GUI is practically Ubuntu desktop edition, so i suggest that you install the "normal" Ubuntu, as you can still configure it like a server.
