error message "no root file system defined" no options to fix it

Asked by Jeff Searles

After I select ubuntu on the boot menu, other option is windows xp pro, the operating system ubuntu 8 starts to load and during the "checking the installation" computing the new partitions 100%, ends with a message "no root file system defined. Please correct this from the partitioning menu". There are no other options at this point. Could this be a result of not enough free disk space? Where is the partitioning menu?

You have not told the installer where you want the main files to be stored. This link should help: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation

While attempting to install ubuntu 10 desktop, during the guided partitioning portion I get two messages; 1. The selected partition/part 2 of/var/lib/partman/devices=/ ubuntu/disks/root.disk, please uninstall thes before trying again. 2. No root file system is defined, please correct this from the partitioning menu. Ubuntu goes into a loop at that time. In Windows I cannont disk partition no thing is visable and since Ubuntu will not install I have not found another option to repair the problem. Any help ?

I also get same message trying to install Umb. w/ CD : No root file system is defined" Then started going in circles. Tried loading Linus also but it just stopped and ejected (do I feel re-jected). Win. XP for some reson
will not start. Was fine then intermitant. Bought a XP "boot" disk too. No success. For my bride, bought HP Lap T P4, 1.7 w/ plenty of ram and hard drive. Only clerical use - word processing, very limited e-mail hardly any internet. OK I'm a stup, didn't get XP recov. disks. So w/ those things in mind,If Umb. and Lin. won't set up
and install and the XP op. syst is obviously contaminated, next? Do I get a new hard drive?
