no sound for realtek ac97 sound card

Asked by miah-the-bee

I am getting absolutely no sound at all. I have external power to my speakers. I have tried plugging them in to every jack on my PC. Ubuntu 8.04 recognizes my sound card as Nvidia ck8s but my bios is set up for ac97 sound. I am not sure if there is a difference. I bought the computer used and trashed the bootlegged windows OS for Freespire. I am new to Linux and don't have a clue how to begin to fix this problem. I see alot of other people are having same problem as me. Like them I have tried everything that I can think of including trying to install driver from realtek website. This did not work and I had to re-install ubuntu. If the answer is out there I would absolutely love to hear it. Please remember that I am a long-time windows user and a new-comer to linux. I need step-by-step instructions

I'm using the same card, Ubuntu worked for me out of the box. In the top right of your screen, do you see the volume control option? Double click it - do you have a switches and options tabs? Maybe you need to enable mix or duplicate front - or turn the volume up/on in one of the settings.

I'm not Familiar with Freespire - sounds like the kernel does not have the drivel module for your sound card loaded by default. The only way I know to solve that problem is to recompile your kernel w/the needed module. As a new linux user - that's going to be a real challenge. You might try downloading a couple of different live install CD's - Ubuntu - Fedora - whatever tickles your fancy, and see if they give you sound running off the live CD. If so - they those distros will give you sound out of the box installed.

Akhona suggests this article as an answer to your question:
i had the same problem, except that my volume was so low it was negligible. here's how i solved it(i 'm a newbie though) went to the sound panel at the top, right clicked, went to Open Volume Control, make sure your "Headphones" 'tab' is visible, otherwise go to "Preferences" and check the box to make it visible. Set the volume to its highest and go to "Preferences" again check Headphone Jack Sense to be visible under "Switch" tab, go ckeck it there!! My sound came to life.
TO Everyone, if you are struggling playing mp3, wma and all sorts of files using the already built in players, use Songbird. (http://getsongbird.com/download/)
