Medibuntu 8.04 repositories appear to be down

Asked by Alex Cockell

I tried running my Update Manager at 00:13 on 13 July... it would appear that Medibuntu repositories are down - there was an update for Adobe Acrobat Reader waiting for me - this failed.

I aborted the rest of the updates - please could someone resolve this as a matter of urgency.

Can I still safely update, or please could someone resolve this problem?

I posted an answer to your bug report and marked it as invalid, because this is no bug in Ubuntu but a problem with Medibuntu. Just updating your package list should do it. If it does not you can reopen your question.

I have just run an Update Manager and had no problem retrieving from Medibuntu.
Try it again.

This forum does not cover the Medibuntu repositories which is managed by a third-party.

Umm - how do I update my package list? Doesn't the system do that automatically through Update manager?

I originally installed Adobe Acrobat through Synaptic...

I launched Synaptic, and at a guess, tried clicking on "Reload". Searched for Acrobat - this then brought up the new versions.

It would appear that this does the same as the "Check" button on Update Manager...

Should I get into the habit of always clicking "Check" before "Install" when in Update Manager?

With apt-get: sudo apt-get update
with Synaptic: Click on the reload button
with update-manager: Click on check button

Ubuntu updates the package list once a day. You can change this: Software Sources -> Updates -> Check for Updates.

Clicking check before install in the update manager is a good idea. So you will install the newest packages.

Thanks folks - my updates went in happily.

Suppose i'm still used to my work's use of package managers - where the package is cross-referenced to the fact i have Acrobat Reader on my user account, and a point release like that is simply cross-ref'd.

I didn't think of Acrobat Reader going through an upgrade.. I kinda assumed it would happen.

Still getting used to Ubuntu... rather than corporate environments.

You can also target the best performing software sources for your location by..

Open "Software Sources" and choose "Other' from the "Dowmload from" drop-down list.
The hit the "Best Server" button.

This will update with the most suitable mirror so you get updates faster.

There is no reason to run Update Manager really as long as you have it regularly scheduled, an icon will appear in the top right of the screen to tell you that there are Updates available to you.
