can not run Hardy Heron live CD

Asked by NicholasA

I am running a multi-boot machine which includes XP, Fedora 8, and Ubuntu Studio 7.10. I am trying to run Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Desktop 32 Bit as a live DVD. During the setup process it asks for a User ID and a Password. No matter what I try, the ID and or Password is not accepted.

Should a Live DVD be asking for and ID and Password? I have tried this from within XP and by booting up from the DVD with no success. I also tried doing an install to an empty partition, but when asked for the User Id and Password that I had entered during the install process, they were not accepted. The only success I had was by doing a complete install on a 2nd computer. I used the whole Hard drive and there were no problems.

Does anyone have any idea as to what may be going on?

Thanks,

Jerry

Jerry, you do not say where you got this Ubuntu disc from. I think that you probably did not get a "Live CD" but rather an install disc or else you clicked on the wrong installation option.

Ubuntu CDs in "Live" mode do not ask for a login name nor a password.

Andre,

Thanks Andre, but I am using the "Official" Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Desktop CD. At least that is what the CD says. The option I choose was : "Try Ubuntu without any change to your computer". The other options were Install, and memory check, which I did just in case. No problems were reported.I have used Knoppix's live CD for several years and it does not ask for a user ID or password. The only time you need a password is if you are doing something that requires root access and that is easily accomplished. So, my question is: why is this supposed live Ubuntu CD asking for a user ID and a password? Is there a specific file that I should be looking for that would tell me it is a live CD?

Do you have any more thoughts on the matter?

Thanks again,

Jerry

Jerry, I have just burnt an install disc of Ubuntu Hardy Heron 32 bit and when I reboot my computer with the disc in the CD player, the first screen asks me to select a language and the second screen offers as a first option, to "try Ubuntu without any changes to your computer". After pressing Enter in response to that option, Ubuntu loads. On the top panel of the Ubuntu desktop it says "Live session user".

There is no login and no password.

It seems most likely that you have a copy of either the Alternate install CD which does not include a "Live" function but relies on a text-based installer or a Server edition.

Some suggestion and tips to solve install issue...

- Minimum system requirements to install Ubuntu 8.04.1 https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/SystemRequirements

- Please check the md5sum of your downloaded Ubuntu .iso image file, here the https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM howto, and compare with http://releases.ubuntu.com/8.04.1/MD5SUMS

- be sure to burn your cd at lower speed you can do usually 4x here an howto https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto

- Please also check the md5sum of your self burned cd. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM

- then to be sure your ram is ok, boot from Ubuntu live cd main menu and at first showed menu, select the item "Memory test" to test your pc ram memory

- Here the steps to install Ubuntu 8.04.1 https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GraphicalInstall

- Watch this video that show howto install Ubuntu on a pc with Windows: http://screencasts.ubuntu.com/Installing_Ubuntu_with_Windows_Dual-Boot

- if something go wrong at startup of Ubuntu live installation when you see the first cd menu like this http://i18.tinypic.com/6tzzndc.jpg pressing F6 you can put useful startup kernel boot parameters https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootOptions as showed here

Try to perform the "Memory test" and the "Check cd for defects" to be sure the cd is read without errors by the destination pc cdrom driver

- Booting from Ubuntu live install cd:
 * if you are in trouble with screen graphic user interface
(usually the screen is black with a blinking cursor or screen out of range message):
- first try to dynamically change screen resolution please the press CTRL + ALT + "+" and/or CTRL + ALT + "-"
- Try to restart the graphic layer press CTRL + ALT + BACKSPACE
- Here the basic step required during install process http://www.howtoforge.com/the-perfect-desktop-ubuntu-8.04-lts-hardy-heron

If you are still in trouble... please reboot your pc and starting with Ubuntu live cd please try to put some common Ubuntu kernel live cd options you can find the boot options howto here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootOptions

Remove the "splash" and "quiet" options to see more boot infos message and/or errors.
Then try some commons parameters by putting them one by one or together:
noacpi nolapic nodma all_generic_ide

If this don't work i suggest you to download and burn on a cd at lower speed you can do (4x), here an howto https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto, the Ubuntu alternate install cd iso image ( ubuntu-8.04.1-alternate-i386.iso ) you can download this cd from here: http://releases.ubuntu.com/8.04.1/

If you are in trouble to download you can try to install and use a torrent client Deluge http://www.deluge-torrent.org/downloads.php to get your desired Ubuntu iso image http://releases.ubuntu.com/releases/8.04.1/ please select a .torrent file

*** if you are installing in dual boot mode Windows + Ubuntu

Please make sure you Windows partition have no errors on it.

Booting in Windows force an a complete hard disk check.
Then reboot again in Windows and make a clean shutdown.
Be sure to boot in Windows twice and to get a clear Windows shutdown.

Marcobra,

I didn't burn my own CD, it is from Ubuntu, the "official" CD with their logo on the CD and the CD envelope it came in. I did a CD check and it came out OK. I also did a memory check and that was also OK. I have over 1 Gig of RAM which should be more than enough. I might go ahead and burn my own CD to see if that solves the problem.

Thanks,

Jerry

Andre,

Could you give me the URL for the Ubuntu Hardy Heron install CD that you downloaded. I might go ahead and try that.

Thanks,

Jerry,

I downloaded the Ubuntu 8.04 version via my ISP who is a local (Australia) mirror.

A copy of Hardy Heron is available as a cover disc on many computer magazines. This would be an ISO file and has to be unpacked before burning to disc - a very simple task in Ubuntu.

I would gladly burn one and send it to you.

Andre,

Yes, I do live in the United States, New Mexico to be exact.
Let's hold off a while before and if I need you to send me a burned image of your CD. I did order the CD from Ubuntu. They said that it may take from 3 to 6 weeks, but who knows.

I downloaded and ISO image of Hardy Heron and used K3b to burn an ISO image onto a CD. The strange thing is that when I used the CD to boot from, it asked for the language and chose Try Ubuntu without changing your PC. It did ask for a User ID and I entered "ubuntu" and for the password I left it blank. It did come up with 2 icons - examples and install. However, the examples was locked (: Who knows why.

I may mount the iso file and see if I can figure out what is going on. There was a good article in May's issue of Linux Journal by Mick Bauer on creating a live CD so I will use that as a guide.

If you have any more ideas please let me know

Have you checked the md5sum of:

1) - your downloaded iso image

md5sum name_of_downloaded_file.iso

2) - your self burned cd...

md5sum /dev/cdrom

Then have you compared the result with: http://releases.ubuntu.com/8.04.1/MD5SUMS

Thank you

marcobra,

I compared the downloaded iso image with http://releases.ubuntu.com/8.04.1/MD5SUMS and they agreed. However, the media that I burned did not. I used K3b to burn the image and as far as I know, K3b is a reliable piece of software, so who knows what I did wrong. I will have to wait until I can get some more blank CDs before I try again.

Thanks for reminding me to check the md5sums.

I usually use the same RW cd to burn different iso release of Ubuntu and i use that cd to install Ubuntu to my friends...!

Be sure to burn at lower speed and activate the verify options in k3b.

Hope this helps

marcobra,

Thanks. I'll give that a try when I get some more blank CDs and thanks for the "verify" options in k3b.

I did a md5sum on the "official" ubuntu cd and that number did not agree with the http://releases.ubuntu.com/8.04.1/MD5SUMS number. That could be because it was changed from the original iso.

Thanks again.
