How to install on new hd

Asked by bolobill

I am getting ready to make the big leap, and have decided to start from scratch. So, I am putting in a new hard drive (Seagate Ultra ATA/100).

I downloaded the Ubuntu OS (ubuntu-6.10-desktop-i386.iso), but am not sure if I need to do anything to the hard drive prior to installation. It came with an installation disk, but it is for MS and Mac.

So, if I put in the new, blank hard drive (after completely removing the old drive with XP), and pop in the Ubuntu disk, is there anything that I need to know so that it happens successfully?

Thank you.

The installation software for ubuntu should detect your drive and install it without problems.

Here is a howto you can get a little more information:

If you just want to install Ubuntu on the drive the installer will take care of everything for you.

If however you want a dual boot system with both OS's on the same drive you should install windows first followed by Ubuntu.

If you wish to have a dual boot system with Ubuntu on the new drive and your existing Windows installation on the old drive you can set that up later in GRUB as a boot option after you have your Ubuntu system installed.

Can you help with this problem?
