Hi Luca,

Thanks for the reply.

No, I am not using that Driver. I downloaded the 2 files as the documentation explains although I do not know how I am going to install these 2 files. Sorry if I sound stupid but I am new to Linux and still trying to make all my hardware work.

Ubuntu is showing the 2 files as archives, but the archive manager cannot open them. Is this normal?

Thanks in advance.

Save this text as canonip4200.ppd: http://paste.ubuntu-nl.org/7565/
Now open System -> Administration -> Printers and try to add a new printer. When asked, choose Install driver and select the file you have just downloaded. Follow the wizard and you should be able to install your printer using that driver.

Hi Luca,

Thanks again for your reply although now with that driver the printer is not printing. First of all it starts the driver as paused, then I press resume, i tried to do a test page but still with no success :(.

Hope you have another solution.

Thanks and Regards.

To get the driver to work properly download the cnijfliter-common and the cnijfilter-ip4200 rpm's from ftp://download.canon.jp/pub/driver/bj/linux/

This files:

ftp://download.canon.jp/pub/driver/bj/linux/cnijfilter-common-2.60-1.i386.rpm
and
ftp://download.canon.jp/pub/driver/bj/linux/cnijfilter-ip4200-2.60-1.i386.rpm

then use synaptic to download alien (or use sudo apt-get install alien)

then when that is finished open up a terminal enter:
cd Desktop (or where you did download the files..)
sudo alien cnijfilter-common-2.60-1.i386.rpm
and
sudo alien cnijfilter-ip4200-2.60-1.i386.rpm

now you have converted those files over to deb packages.

Now enter:
sudo dpkg -i cnijfilter-*

Now you have installed those drivers needed to use the printer.

If that still does not help, use the driver for MultiPass MP500, that also works like a charm :-)

Hope this helps you a bit.

Hi Mr. Tommy Mikkelsen,

First of all thank you for trying to helping me out.

I tried to install the ip4200 drivers, although the driver was installed as soon as I tried a test page, nothing comes out, and I am sure that I selected the right USB Port.

Then I tried to install the MP500 drivers, using the following command :

sudo dpkg -i cnijfilter-mp500*

but I could not depkg and install the drivers. The following message appeared.

dpkg-deb: `cnijfilter-mp500-2.60-1.i386.rpm' is not a debian format archive
dpkg: error processing cnijfilter-mp500-2.60-1.i386.rpm (--install):

Unpacking cnijfilter-mp500 (from cnijfilter-mp500_2.60-2_i386.deb) ...
dpkg: error processing cnijfilter-mp500_2.60-2_i386.deb (--install):
trying to overwrite `/usr/local/bin/cngpijmon', which is also in package cnijfilter-ip4200

Errors were encountered while processing:
 cnijfilter-mp500-2.60-1.i386.rpm
 cnijfilter-mp500_2.60-2_i386.deb

Am I doing something wrong?!

Thanks in advance and best regards.

The MP500 drivers should be included in the driver list, and it should not be necessary to manually install it. Though the problem you are facing here is "easy" fixable :-)

Type in a terminal:
 sudo dpkg -r cnijfilter-ip4200

Which is the file that is making this error, and afterwars you install your MP500 driver again:
 sudo dpkg -r cnijfilter-mp500_2.60-2_i386.deb

This procedure should at least fix the problems you are describing, but I say it again, you should not have to install the MP500 driver as it all ready is installed in your system.

Tell me how it goes.

Best Regards,

Hi. I'm also totally new to ubuntu. Tommy, I followed your instructions and i think i installed that drivers for iP4200. Then I tried to add a new printer. New driver for iP4200 was in the list. When I tried to install this drivers i was asked to select a .ppd file. I don't know what to do next, where is that .ppd file?Thx

Hi Tommy,

Thanks again for your time but I still cannot solve the problem. The driver
ip4200 is installed but nothing happens when I try to print a test page.

Another thing is that MP500 does not appear.

I followed your instructions but still it is not there, I even try to change
one of the instuctions from :

sudo dpkg -r cnijfilter-mp500_2.60-2_i386.deb to sudo dpkg -i sudo dpkg
-r cnijfilter-mp500_2.60-2_i386.deb

but still with no success.

I managed to print with TurboPrint though but it always displays a logo
unless I buy the software (Which I do not plan to!)

I even tried to contact Canon and they are not interested in providing a
driver for Linux!

Thanks again.

Noel

Hi :-)

In the Canon section for drivers (in gnome-cups-manager -> add new printer) There is a printer called MultiPass MP500, try that one, that is the one I am currently using, please report back if that helps.. :-)

Hi Tommy,

I do not have that printer option in the gnome-cups-manager. What I did I
installed the PPD manually and the option appeared, but still the printer is
not responding. :(

Thank you and best regards.

Okey, do this now: Open up Synaptic (ALT+F2 enter synaptic (or your way of opening the app.))

Search for gutenprint, when the results come up, locate " cupsys-driver-gutenprint " and mark it for install (double click it or right click the file click "Mark for install..."

Alternative route:

open up the terminal and write:

sudo apt-get install cupsys-driver-gutenprint

This will install the MultiPass MP500 Driver, and it should work now.

Please report back if this helps.

Best Regards and Good Luck.

This is really freaking me out!

Thank you alot for your support. I really appreciate.

On the Canadian Canon website there are linux drivers in RPM format (see below for the list and the website http://www.canon.com.au/products/all_in_one_printers/all_in_one_printers/mp600_support.aspx). Now... will this work via "alien" and then dpkg -i driver.deb? I don't have the printer here to test it.

Hi Noel, did you have any luck? I tried the Australian Canon drivers for Fedora today and the printer receives some information since the LCD turns on but it doesn't print at all and it doesn't give any error message.

I converted the RPM's to debian packages and then I selected the PPD file from /usr/share/cups/model/canonmp600.ppd

I'm curious why it would work in Fedora and not in Ubuntu.

Hi Rui,

It did not work either, I cannot even find the new printer in cups manager!
I tried to compile using alien, the packages where compiled and installed
but I did not notice any difference.

I'm quite new to the linux world and I am still not that confident on how
the system works, so it is possible that I am not creating the packages
correctly.

Thanks for you help

Hi. I've tried a different approach and finally the printer works. I have used the following instructions:
http://mambo.kuhp.kyoto-u.ac.jp/~takushi/

First, you add the following line to your "/etc/apt/sources.list"

deb http://mambo.kuhp.kyoto-u.ac.jp/~takushi/ubuntu ./

Then you do in a terminal:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install libcnbj-2.6 bjfilter-2.6 pstocanonbj

Then you add a printer using the normal interface and you select the MP500 driver. For me, it works. I hope for you too. In any case I hope someone more experienced can explain us why the MP600 linux Fedora driver does not work in Ubuntu.

Hi everybody,

Also I did install the driver ip4200 as described in the Community Doc
"https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HardwareSupportComponentsPrinters/CanonPrinters/CanonPixmaIP4200#preview" and used it with my PIXMA MP600 for a while.

In the meantime Canon presented a more appropriate driver for the MP600, which one can get directly from Canon: "http://www.canon-asia.com/index.jsp?fuseaction=support/" as follows:
choice "support and download", then
choice "Inkjet Multifunctional Printers"
select Model: "PIXMA MP600"
select in Menu: "Drivers & Softwares", then click on tab "Next"
select from Drivers the radiobutton "MP600 Printer Driver Ver. 2.70 (Linux) 2007-03" and
download the packages "cnijfilter-common-2.70-1.i386.rpm" and "cnijfilter-mp600-2.70-1.i386.rpm".
(You can find here also the other packages Rui mentioned, just select from Drivers the radiobutton "MP600 Scanner Driver Ver. 1.00 (Linux) 2007-03".)

The installation can be then carried out as recommended in the Community Doc cited above. I am using Ubuntu 6.06 LTS, and I had no problems with printing the test page or some ducuments.

Best regards
Zoltan

The request is still valid: I own a Canon PIXMA MP600 and it's not detected "out of the box" by Ubuntu Hardy Heron. The MP500 and MP610 versions are ok.

The missing profiles for Canon PIXMA printers should be added.

By the way, the MP500 driver (which is based on the iP4000's) works well for the MP600 but is insufficient to print pictures: the available resolutions are not adequate for photo printing and 1200x1200, 2400x2400 and maybe larger ones should be included.
