Stuck in low graphics mode after updating NVIDIA drivers

Asked by Ataris

I updated my NVIDIA drivers, and everything was working fine. When I next started up my computer, the drivers were disabled (I found that out later), and so Ubuntu decided to plunge me into "low-graphics" mode. I got to GNOME okay, but the highest resolution I can get is 640x480 -- I cannot work like this. I reenabled the NIVIDIA drivers, but nothing happens. I've tried rebooting (several times), but I'm still stuck. Can someone tell me how to get back into "high-graphics" mode?

This happened to me as well. I eventually went to this site, read the info, etc, and downloaded EnvyNG, which installs the correct Nvidia or ATI card for you. Worked fine for me, and many others.

For me, this was no help.
EnvyNG installs a Nvidia driver, but this driver just offers 640x480 and 320x240.
The 'NVIDIA X Server Settings' program works only when the NVIDIA X driver is
active. Just run 'nvidia-xconfig' as root and reboot the X server does not help.
It does not use the NVIDIA X driver. It seems to be necessary to activate the
proprietory NVIDIA driver in the 'Hardware driver' program. After a reboot the
driver works 640x480 and the 'NVIDIA X Server Settings' program is unusable
in 640x480.

All this started with an Ubunutu upgrade (which required a reboot).

I doubted EnvyNG, but when the xserver xorg code no longer fixed my problem, I used it and downloaded the latest driver. Then, after restarting, it's still in a low resolution. I did NOT reenable the other Nvidia drivers but left everything the same. I then entered the "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" code and when I restarted, everything worked fine, and I had all of my resolutions back. The Hardware Drivers still says that the drivers aren't enabled, but games still run and 3d still works. You just have to trust Envy.
