how to install

Asked by C Jack

Until now no Ubuntu system is on my computer.

Twice downloaded 8.04 using Mozilla Firefox. Have no idea how to install it. No installation popup appeared. An icon is on my desktop but when I click it I get a message that says Windows cannot install it.

So, it is on my machine somewhere.

What do I do now????

C Jack

We need to know, what type of file it is. Right click on file, look in the properties and tell us, what the type of this file is.

Because there exists some installation in executible file, that is painless for windows users, but never mind...

Take any burning tool (nero for instance) and burn this iso file on a CD. (There is special function to burn image on a CD, do not make a data CD, this won't be usable.) This has the advantage, that when anything happens, you have fresh OS on CD.

This CD is bootable then. So if you put it into CD drive while booting (or better before shutting down) your computer and while starting press some key for boot-up menu (F12 on most PCs), select CD and boot from it, you will get into Ubuntu. There just double-click on icon Install and wizard will take you throughout the installation.

You can also use this CD to just boot anywhere into linux. This live operating system is not so usable, but it can be used really anywhere. Without footage on PC's hard drives. But this is not really OS, it is something like a tool...

Hello

follow the directions at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto (Burn your cd at a lower speed say at 4x and check your MD5 sums)

Bit info about MD5 sums:
With an md5 sum you can compare the contents of files. If your .iso file is defect (this can happen when you download it), it's md5sum would be different than that one on the Ubuntu server.

To calculate the md5sum of your image file, you can use a command line tool like http://www.md5summer.org/download.html for Windows (on Ubuntu it's the 'md5sum' command). Then compare the calculated value with the ones in this list http://releases.ubuntu.com/8.04/MD5SUMS.
So if you have the ubuntu-8.04.1-desktop-i386.iso, the calculated value should be c69e34e92d5402d1b87e6babc739f774

If the file has a different md5sum than expected, I would recommend to download that iso again.

You can also see screenshots of partitioning and installing here :

Hope it helps

Bhavani Shankar.
