Send message to another user through command line

Asked by Roberto Cássio Jr.

On Gutsy a new and cool feature was introduced on gnome-desktop: when the screen is locked, you can leave a message to the user by clicking the "leave message" button A popup will be shown when user comes back and unlock his screen.

My question is: is there any command which could allow me to do this through command line? (Let's say I'm connected remotely through SSH to my machine and want to leave a message for the current logged user...)

I have some knowledge on C++ programming, so if there's no tool for doing this but is easy to make, I'd appreciate some hint too.

Thanks, Vojtěch, but unfortunately I think those don't solve my problem. I'm able to, using those tools, send messages to a user which is with a text terminal open; but I'd like something to send messages from command line to the gnome's graphical interface, making that popup appear (the same would appear if you send a message through the "Leave message" button on the screen lock dialog).

Maybe I'm doing something wrong... or those tools are simply not able to do it.. I don't know...

If I understand you correctly, you want something like netsend in Windows. But as far as I know; it is not possible to do this in Ubuntu. I guess this is because of the potential for spamming other users.

Can you help with this problem?
