open office beta 3 installed but not appearing in the 'application-> office' menu

Asked by leo

I have installed ubuntu 8.04 with built-in open office 2.4. After having downloaded open office beta 3 I tried to update it with the 'update' shell script file without success so I did it manually through the terminal. Everything seems ok in the synaptic manager (all open office beta 3 modules are marked as installed) but when I try to launch any xxxx office application through the applications->office->xxxx menu, this is a version 2.4 which starts. How to switch to its beta 3 equivalent ?

Thanks for your help and time.

Chris

This might help. To add this launcher to your system menu you must right click applications than go to edit menu, go down to office, than click add. In command use this /opt/openoffice.org3/program/soffice, then make a name and comment then start it. This gave me a separate item that I named Office 3 that appeared as a menu item at the bottom of the menu items but outside of the Office menu.

Good luck

M

Thanks Miroslav, I didn't know hoe to manage the applications launcher menu. I did it and it works but I have still an issue : how to get the right files association with office beta 3, i.e. when I try to open a .doc file for instance with the file manager, only the office 2.4 word processor is proposed. How to manage files types association under linux ?
Should I uninstall open office 2.4 or not ? (I would prefer to keep it in case of)

Sorry if this is a basic question, but like many linux newbees I am more accustomed to the windows way of doing things.
