modem and firewall problem

Hi if its ok ill mention 2 problems first one is i tried to set up firestarterbut it said it could not connect i think its because my ambit external broadband modem is connected with a usb cable is there anyway round this to my second problem i tried using a ethernet cable connection instead but could not even access the internet never mind use the firewall my isp is ntl hope you can help colin

Well, by default Ubuntu does not have any processes actively listening on any ports, so a firewall is generally not needed. Usually you would start worrying about a firewall if you are running a server, or Windows :-) Also if you happen to be using a router, then you are already behind a hardware firewall.

As far as connecting your cable modem to the Ethernet port, it should just be plug and play, other then you may have to disconnect the power to your modem and then reconnect it. That is provided that your Ethernet adapter is recognized and working properly.

Many thanks for help i initialy did plug and play with no success have tried a new ethernet cable and yippee success many thanks again firestarter now works
