how do I add a cdrom

Asked by Max Boivin

I'm using Xubuntu 6.10 and when I put a blank disk in my LG dvd-writer, the dmesg | tail send me this message :

[17181513.564000] hdd: command error: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
[17181513.564000] hdd: command error: error=0x54 { AbortedCommand LastFailedSense=0x05 }
[17181513.564000] ide: failed opcode was: unknown
[17181513.564000] end_request: I/O error, dev hdd, sector 0
[17181513.564000] FAT: unable to read boot sector
[17219599.000000] cdrom: This disc doesn't have any tracks I recognize!
[17219607.120000] attempt to access beyond end of device
[17219607.120000] hdd: rw=0, want=68, limit=4

[17219650.036000] cdrom: This disc doesn't have any tracks I recognize!

I've try to shout at my computer and to swear a lot but it didn't do any good. Of course, before that I've tried to be sweet an all, to make promise and all those shit but nothing work. So now I haven't the slightess idea on what to try.
I've seen that many people have the same kind of problem so I'm tinking that maybe there is a solution, and if this isn't the case maybe someone is working on one, and if this isn't the case, maybe someone should and this someone won't be me (as you can guess). I can barely speak english so what good can I do? After all, I'm just a trained ape... not really... do you think a trained ape could use Linux? Even whit Ubuntu... even the smartest one... ok... I'm just a french canadian, and a noob on Linux... Can you help me anyway?

Thank you in advance, and sorry for all the silly stuff I've wrote (and of course for all the misspelling and syntax error...)

I hope to have some news soon enough...

In order to be able to mount a partition (or drive), there must be a valid filesystem on it first. A blank CD does not have a valid filesystem, it is just blank. Therefore it is impossible to mount such a CD.

All right, but, what can I do if I want to write something on this blank disk?

You use a software that writes to the CD. This process is called "burning". You can use either GnomeBaker if you use Gnome, or K3b if you use KDE.

Can you help with this problem?
