free overwrite program which will work in linux, similar to eraser which is for windows

Is there a free program that can be used to completely overwrite the hard disk so that no data can be recovered? There is a program called Eraser at www.heidi.ie/eraser which will overwrite in Windows but it does not seem to work on Ubuntu. Can it be made to do so? There is no Window OS on the hard disk, only old versions of Ubuntu and the current install of 8.04. At one time the hard drive did function in Windows but Ubuntu 8.04 is now the only partition.
