i have been trying to update and the update manger shows thta the index files failed to download

Open System menu, Administration, Software Sources.

Choose the "download from" list and select "Other" and then the "Best Server" button.

This will find the fastest servers for you to download from.
Then you can open Update Manager in the Administration menu & untick the CDROM on the "Third Party Software" tab.

sudo geit /etc/apt/sources.list

remove everything and paste the below

Run the update manager

gksu "update-manager -c"

Or sudo apt-get update

Or / and:

if it doesnt work then

Click System > Administration > Software Sources
Click the Download From menu and choose other
Click the Select Best Server button and wait till it finds one.
Click Choose Server
Run the update manager again.
