Defrag isn't required on Linux, please read https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/hal/+question/29045

Then please install a simple firewall script and, if you can, please use only opensource software.

Many parts of the Ubuntu software that you are using now are made by hackers.

So please respect hackers please read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_free_software

I think hackers are not crackers please read: http://www.tprthai.net/hacker.htm

Without hackers you can't use Ubuntu now.

Thank you

I'm not an authorised greeter but welcome to Ubuntu anyway.

It may help if you can tell us which version of Ubuntu you are using.

To handle updates, go to, on the top panel, System/Administration/Software Sources, and you will see the update panel

Synaptic gives access to the updates and uninstalled programs too. Its found by by clicking /Administration/Synaptic Package Manager/

When in Synaptic, I make a point of first clicking Settings/Preferences/ and ensuring the top four selection boxes are selected then make sure to click apply before OK. It's a good policy to click reload too.

Now you can download a GUI for the Ubuntu firewall system from Synaptic. Click [search] and type [Firestarter] (without the brackets) click search again, then click the Firestarter select box, click apply at the top, apply in the pop up panel, and you will have your firewall GUI.

To set up Firestarter, close synaptic and you should see Firestarter up near the top of the administration panel

Please forgive me if I over explained, and let us know how you get on.
