Mouse pointer goes crazy

my computer mouse (laptop dell) drifts across the screen upward to the corner, i have to reboot the system each time that happens.

it there a solution or it is but?

I have a Dell laptop (circa 2003) with the same drifting mouse pointer (goes to upper and lower corners).

You showed that you fixed the problem yourself. How? Windows XP Professional tells me that the drivers I have are fine and won't allow an update.
