How to put X into 16 bit mode

Asked by Thinboy00

Is it possible to put X into 16 bit mode? A number of versions of Zork running under Wine seem to need this. I'd also like to be able to put it back to normal when I'm done.

You can, but the only way of I know right now is to edit the xorg.conf file (alt+f2, "gksudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf") in the resolution section to 24. After that save, logout, login, and it'll be in 16bit.

Maybe you could create another user that has the xorg in 16bit mode, so you can just use the 'Fast User Switch Applet' to go into 16bit and play. But I'm not sure if that would work.

Um, okay, but what exactly do I need to change? I am not very familiar with this file.

You should see a line like this:

Defaultdepth ##

Where ## is the color depth you'd like the thing to be (16 for you). However, first create a new user in Ubuntu (System - Administration - Users and Groups, click Unlock, Add User), then log onto that user (you can do so either by logging out and logging into them, or by clicking on your name in the top-panel and selecting the other user. Then change the file in there.

I've discovered dosbox seems to take care of everything for me, but thanks anyway
