What's the difference between a 'package' and an 'application' in the *nix world?

I was working on https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SystemTools when I realised I didn't know if should write about 'packages' or 'applications'. I've assumed that an application is the collection of bits assembled behind a GUI, while the 'bits' are packages. But I couldn't find anything about the difference... so

What's the difference between a 'package' and an 'application' in the *nix world?

Hello

A software package is a set of programs/codes put together in a format which is installable and when the package is installed for a specific use it becomes an application to be simple

An application is a thing that is used to perform a specific task

yes libraries,codecs etc are separate software packages...
