add/remove

i can select ant programme from add/remove. they are present in list but i cant select them. only installed programmes cab be slected for uninstall

You don't seem to have the repos enabled.
Goto System->Administration->Software Sources
Check first four checkboxes (and the fifth one if you wish the have the source codes also)
Click 3rd party software tab and check all checkboxes
Click Updates tab and check the Important and Recommended updates.

Close the window and press Reload button when prompted to.
Now try again.

Another tip: To find out the programs installed on your computer use the below command in a terminal

dpkg --get-selections
