ubuntu 8.04 very slow at times

with Firefox in the net everything is very slow. The computer seems to be doing a lot of work in the background even though I have nothing else going on.
Used to be fast at the beginning but now it is really bad.
In System Monitor, the Network History usage is about 70% and the Memory and Swap Hist. about 50%. This when nothing is going on.
My Ubuntu knowledge is very limited

did you try another browser like opera, or safari?

thank you for your suggestion.
I will download Opera which also lists Linux as a supported OS.
I will post a note to let you know if things improved.

hey whats your system specs like ram,processor,graphics card.does your system qualify as Recommended specs Pc or minimum requirement pc.also install/check for startup programmes that you dont use like blue tooth,printer,scanner services.

I don't know which is the processor but I know it has 1Gb Ram. If you give me the linux command i can find out.It used to run Windows XP when I bought it used from the County.I only use it for internet, no printer, scanner, etc, attached, only a wireless card.Firefox run ok for some time and then became very slow.I already installed Opera and it is ok. so i should probably leave it alone for now.Thank you again.

I installed Opera and it works ok now.
Thank you to all the people that helped me with suggestions.
