computer won't boot from disk

Asked by John

Hi all

I burned a copy of Ubuntu but my computer won't boot it from the cd drive, it just keeps booting up Windows istead. I've changed the boot sequence in the BIOS to make the cd drive the first one but it doesn't make any difference, it still boots up Windows.

Can anyone help - I'm getting really frustrated as I'm very keen to try Ubuntu.

Thanks

Hi John,

If your BIOS allows boot from cdrom, then it should. If it is not, then it is highly likely that your Ubuntu install disk is bad.

If you burned the iso file to the cd (like a normal file), instead of writing the image, then that is probably your problem. Pop the disk into the drive, and look at the cdrom in file manager. If you see a single file: <filename>.iso, then that is your problem.

If you don't have a windows application that will write iso images to cdrom, then I recommend deepburner. The free version will burn iso images.

Please report back here and change the question status to Solved if this resolves your issue.

Thanks!

Thanks mate, you were right! The copy I burnt was bad. Took me a while to work out how to use Deepburner, but once I did - no worries!

Thanks very much for your help.

John
