I'm glad that this Ubuntu OS has a Microsoft Word that could read pdf files in it. But it displays Chinese characters as blank so I could not read. SOS

jleach,

I personally recommend sudo, which asks for the user's password. su requires the root password. You are not asked to set the root password during a default install. To generate a root password navigate to (this assumes you are using gnome and not kde):

System > Administration > Users and Groups

Click the unlock button and enter your user password. Then select the root user, and click the properties button. Enter the same password twice, and you now have a root password.

Then you can use su.

Please report back here and change the question status to Solved if this resolves your question.

Thanks!

Harvey

Hi, this is Joe. Thanks for your answer. New to Xubuntu. I am using Xfce. Do I just type in sudo? I went ahead and did the root thing and now I can log on as superuser. Thanks for your help
