cannot boot v7.04

Asked by Wil

downloaded v7.04 upgrade from v6.10. seemed to go well however when asked for restart and i clicked on the restart button nothing happened. Finally I powered down and restarted. Loads to the point where file check forced (not cleanly unmounted) then asks for reboot again. This time file check clean but boot fails at this point. nothing but blinking cursor. keyboard is functional. Tried recovery mode with same results (x3)
hardware info:
p4 3.0GHz
512 MB RAM
160 GB seagate 7200rpm
this is a dual boot system with xp which loads and functions.

Good morning,

How did you download the upgrade from 6.10 to 7.04? Did you use the upgrade manager? When Grub, the boot loader starts, can you select the recovery mode and then boot your system?

Good Afternoon,
I downloaded from upgrade manager. I can select recovery mode however I have the same problem -- after the boot bar reaches about two thirds the screen changes to text and after reaching "file clean" I get "ok" then the text stops and I get a flashing cursor.

@Wil:
When i tried to boot from the 7.04 LiveCD on my Pavilion dv6017EA (dv6000 series) it stopped at setting up console fonts.
I resolved this issue by adding NOAPIC to the boot options with F6. You can change your grub config by adding the NOAPIC line and try booting.
You could change your grub by booting with a alternate cd in rescue mode and then choose for mounting your local filesystem. Then edit grub with vi (or nano) /boot/grub/menu.lst.
Look for the first kernel line, and add NOAPIC to it, after quit splash.

Thanks for the input. I have since downloaded V7.04 and burned a live CD The live CD ran and installed without a hitch.
