Failure during updates

I have 128 updates awaiting, but every time I run the updates I get the error message;

E: Could not get lock /var/cache/apt/archives/lock - open (11 Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the download directory

What should I do?

Sounds like you don't have root permissions?

I do have root permissions and have entered the password when requested, then the error occurs.

Updates used to work but not anymore

I started up the Synaptic installer, shut it down and tried the updates again and it now works. ???

It's because it couldn't get an exclusive lock. Shutting down synaptic was what solved it, though how you started it in the first place is ... interesting.
