Why do I get this error output and how can I resolve it?

Asked by Mark

 Hi all.

When I download Ubuntu Tweaks from a web-site called computeractive. I get this Error Output.::

/tmp/ubuntu-tweak_0.2.4-ubuntu2_all-2.deb could not be opened, because the associated helper application does not exist. Change the association in your preferences.

I use the default option to install the desired package witch is Gdebi.

So just to be completely clear I follow these steps:

(i) I download Ubuntu Tweaks from a website called computeractive.
(ii) I use Gdebi Package installer to TRY to install the package.
(iii) I get this error message: :

/tmp/ubuntu-tweak_0.2.4-ubuntu2_all-2.deb could not be opened, because the associated helper application does not exist. Change the association in your preferences.

Has anybody came accros this error before? and how do I go about rectifying it??

 Cheers for now.

I cannot reproduce the problem. Try the following.

1 - Make sure gdebi exists in your system. Just open a console and type 'gdebi' (without qoutes). If you get some response, it exists.

2a - If it does not exist, install it. Open a console and type:
sudo apt-get install gdebi.

2b - If it does exist, click on Open with tab, inside the ubuntu-tweak_0.2.4-ubuntu2_all-2.deb properties (right click, properties). Then, at the bottom, click Add. At the bottom again, click 'Use a custom command'. Browse /usr/bin to get /usr/bin/gdebi command.
After that, when you are back to Open with tab, make sure that GDebi is selected as default application. Then, try again to open the file with double click.

Hello

First

sudo apt-get install gdebi.

then right click on the downloaded file and click on properties under the open with tab at the bottom, click Add. At the bottom again, click 'Use a custom command'. Browse /usr/bin and click on gdebi or gdebi-gtk and click on open.

 Bhavani.

I have been having a problem with something else involving my router and open ports.
I know it is a separate subject but seeing as you are so clued up Im wondering if you might be able to give me a hand with it??

Is there any way I can maybe get in touch with you some other way ie email??

I don't know if you remember but you have successfully helped me in the past So you Ubuntu knowledge can be very helpfull indeed.
I understand if this might not be O.K with you but I thought it would be worth a try just asking...

 Thanks

   Mark...

Once again Bhavani Shankar you've sorted it for me.

It worked fine this time and installed corectly
The only problem was I got an error message saying:

   ERROR
  Sorry.
Ubuntu Tweak can only work on Ubuntu 7.04 or 7.10.

I don't think even you could sort that one out. LOL.

 Thanks once again Bhavani.

 Keep up the good work..

what is the Bin Folder/Directory?? Is that where all the installed programs are??
And how can I look at that file/folder/directory?? again, What program do I use??
