Newbie needs help with sound

I get no sound out of my Logitech Z Cinema speaker system. Although Z Cin⊠ma (Alsa mixer) is listed under devices in Default Mixer Tracks, it is not listed in any Sound playback lists.

I selected every option in the playback list including ALSA, tried to play a system sound and got nothing. I did here one tone when I tested USD Audio option in Sound Event but the Sound preference box closed abruptly.

Any help would be appreciated

Are you using Hardy?
Then at a terminal, type:
sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-hardy

Otherwise:
sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules
