If you are using hardy try this boot into recovery mode (single user mode). Then select the option to fix X.

what about the screen resolution?

OK to change the display resolution in Gnome:

First enable the display configuration to appear in menu:

System->Preferences->Main menu

From the left selection choose "Other" and tick on "Display"

No the display configurator is available at:

Applications->Other->Display

From the Display configurator choose the correct resolution your monitor supports.

And finally from System->Preferences->Screen resolution choose the desired resolution.

Note this may cause some instability in your display that's why it was hidden by default. In that case do a ctrl-alt-backspace to kill the X server and try again
