Fixed Windows - Now Ubuntu Won't Boot

Asked by Will Shank

I have two SATA drives on my system. Windows XP is on the #1(0?) and Ubuntu is on the #2(1?). Recently I lost the ability to boot into Windows and none of the standard remedies could fix the problem so I reformatted the #1 drive and reinstalled Windows.

Now, I no longer have the ability to boot into Ubuntu. I booted from the Ubuntu CD and tried a solution that was suggested to me:

Boot off the Live CD; Open a terminal;

sudo grub
>root (hd0,0)
>setup (hd0)
>exit

When I typed the setup line I got this message:

"Error 17 Cannot mount the selected partition"

Now I am stuck. Can someone please help?

Here are two links that might help. The first is the Super Grub Disk which you can reinstall GRUB easily with, the other explains more about using the regular LiveCD:
http://gparted-livecd.tuxfamily.org/
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RecoveringUbuntuAfterInstallingWindows
A partition like /dev/sda1 is (hd0,0) and sda2 is (hd0,1) and so on.
/dev/sdb1 is (hd1,0), etc...

Can you help with this problem?
