Open Office and Gnome Desktop.

Asked by Myroslav

This is my third post on this forum regarding this problem. With the other two, suggestions were made that I thought had fixed things, but problems persist with open office. I get frequent freezes using open office writer. Pressing on functions such as "Save as" and others, or trying to open two documents at the same time, or trying to use Spell check, cause the screen to turn gray and the program to freeze. I must force close the program and lose all unsaved data. I was becoming convinced that open office was irreparably corrupted.

I am also running the kde desktop which I have not been using much. I tried open office writer in kde and everything works perfectly. I deduce then that my problem is not with open office, but with open office in gnome. I prefer using the gnome desktop up until now. Any ideas about what's going on and how to fix it?

When i understand it correct you have first Installed Kubuntu and want now try to change to the Gnome-Desktop?
Have you installed the metapackage: ubuntu-desktop via Synaptic or in Terminal by doing: sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop ?
Maybe this can help solving your problem

Hello,
same "freeze and grey screen" happens when using open-office calc with .xls files.
Hardware : my brand new laptop (hp/compaq 6710).
Ubuntu 8.04 desktop i386 installed from cd + updates.

I wonder if the problem comes from open-office or gnome (compiz?). The whole screen is transparent/grey except task bar.
I hope it can help.

Thanks to everyone for responding.

There was a big update of Open Office today and things appear to be fixed.
