Ubuntu Kernels filling up boot loader

Asked by jrkrietsch

I have an HP Media PC. It's running a Phoenix 5.11 core version 6.0 BIOS.

I updated from Ubuntu 7.10 when 8.4 first came out. Since then there have been several Kernel updates.

Each kernel update has shown up on my boot loader. Meaning that instead of having to choose between my Vista and latest Ubuntu OS, I've got this to choose from:

Ubuntu 8.04 kernel 2.6.24-19 [latest kernel I've downloaded, the preferred one of course]
Ubuntu 8.04 kernel 2.6.24-19 (recovery)
Ubuntu... 2.6.24-18 [and recovery]
.... all the way down to
Ubuntu.... 24-14 (and recovery)
ubuntu memtest86
Vista
Vista Recovery

Meaning I've got about 12 choices to load on boot.

Can I, or how can I get rid of the 24-14 through 24-18 kernels without damaging the latest and greatest one? And how can I prevent my computer from retaining every old kernel it's ever downloaded?

Thanks for the help

I did this by uninstalling the unwanted kernels and related repositories in Synaptic Package Manager.

Much easier way. I just discovered a package called "GrubEditor" in Synaptic. This is an easy to use GUI that will appear under System Tools in your Applications menu.

Can you help with this problem?
