nonworking sound card OPL 3-SAx ISA PnP how to newb

Asked by Jeff Graham

I just installed linux OS on a 233Mhz pen II . The sound card was not installed. It is a Yamaha OPL 3-SAx in a ISA slot. The card has no jumpers so its a plug and play card. What would be the easiest way to get the soundcard working? Ive used DOS,win 3.1,to XP, but know nothing about linux or Ubuntu. Does Ubuntu have a hardware detector, how do i get and then install drivers for my OPL 3-SAx sound card. Are there any Ununtu users in Fort Myers, Florida that could lead me be the hand? baby newb jeff

Hello !

I saw on the net that this card is supported by module opl3sa2 (it's equivalent to a driver in Windows) ...

Maybe you can try to issue "sudo modprobe opl3sa2" in a terminal and see if it gives a result ...

Regards,
Benoît

I have an AMD K6-2 machine with the same sound card. On boot up, the start screen shows the card as being recognized, but Xubuntu says the card is busy or not there when loading and there is no sound. I tried the above suggestion and got no response, when I use "sudo modprobe snd-opl3sa2" I get the following message

"FATAL: Error inserting snd_opl3sa2 (/lib/modules/2.6.15-28-386/kernel/sound/isa/snd-opl3sa2.ko): No such device"

Why does the bios recognize it, but not Xubuntu?

Can you help with this problem?
