Asked by luan

1. I want to set up a local home server with my current home router that I have, prefer this server to be set up in KDE or default Desktop look not command line.
2. I also need to be able to remote login from a client computers (home computer windows or linux OS). This will have the same compability as RemoteDesktop tool like in Windows XP.
3. Eventually, I want to turn home server into a webserver (LAMP) after I can do Number 1 and 2 above. Please provide easy to follow step by step instructions. Thank you.

Apache 2 in the software repository does the server stuff.
To enable remote login you go to System>Preferences>Remote Desktop

Thanks for this question.

1) You can setup your server by using the Kubuntu live-CD. This will install automatically the KDE desktop environment. All server packages are also available for the computer installed in this way.

2) Remote login to terminal is possible via ssh which you will have clients automatically on a linux OS computer. There are ssh clients for windows you can install on a windows computer (i.e. putty)

3) LAMP means Linux, Apache, Mysql and PHP. All those packages are easily installable via any package manager, in KDE you like will use adept, but you can also use synaptic. Here are extensive instructions how to install packages https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoftwareManagement

Furthermore, here are very simple instructions how to install and configure LAMP on ubuntu from a commandline terminal http://www.howtoforge.com/ubuntu_lamp_for_newbies

I hope you understand that everybody answering questions here is a volunteer. Therefore please appreciate that we cannot write individual in depth instructions for every question. Please be open to use already existing general instructions that you are directed to, and if there are issue that you don't understand, ask a concrete question about this particular issue.

I hope this helps you.
