ubuntu610 amd64 fglrx on ati x1300 adapter.
hello to all,
-initial install made with alternate cd. it configured xorg.conf with generic ati driver for a default ati card, not x1300.
-in order to harness the full potential of the x1300 and lcd wide monitor, the fglrx driver was installed based, at that time, on the fglrx driver in synaptic (see request 3080).
-the latter was replaced shortly afterwards; the innitial fglrx does not exist anymore; now I have xorg-fglrx with various hyphenated other entries and fglrx-control.
-currently, a fglrxinfo command yelds this
~$ fglrxinfo
Xlib: extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0".
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: Mesa project: www.mesa3d.org
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect
OpenGL version string: 1.2 (1.5 Mesa 6.5.1)
-I tryed to reconfigure xorg.conf with the new xorgf-glrx driver but the system boots only with a command prompt and comes up with errors in xorg.conf -no big surprize- the conflict is obvious; I had to revert to the previous Messa fglrx -see above.
-beryl because of this situation refuses to work properly; it comes down with this
beryl-manager
:~$ Xlib: extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0".

-moreover, because of the old fglrx (Messa) and beryl 'precarous install' another set of problems appeared; the system functions well only under gnome session that I have to pick at every boot. as soon as I quit beryl (the gem quit) the taskbar disappears etc.
-any idea where the old fglrx (Messa) resides to get rid of it? (is this feasible?) or
-how to reconfigure or, better, link the new xorg-fglrx into xorg.conf? if I try to revert to the original xorg.conf (the one with ati generic driver) for sure the system will crush again -the innitial xorg in synaptic is gone.
any input is appreciated.
Regards,
peter b
