Hi Philip,

If you want to receive only security updates go to System => Administration => Software Sources, open the Updates tab and in the "Ubuntu updates" section leave checked only "Important security updates (hardy-security)".

another question concerning this.........why am i getting updates for apps. i don't have?

You don't have to get recommended updates (hardy-updates). Those updates include bug fixes for applications, all security updates are in hardy-security. If your system works fine and you don't want to download updates for applications, you can uncheck "Recommended updates" in Software Sources.

sorry but this didn't answer my question.............why am i getting updates for apps. i don't have? i would probably update my applications but i get updates for the kde desktop which i don't use. i'm using gnome with ubuntu 8.04. maybe no one has an answer for this but getting and installing updates sort of scares me.........just look at the problems on this site caused by updates. i'm a receint linux user......and very happy about it.....i am a long time user of microsoft starting back to when computers had no hard disk and everything ran in memory........any, glad those days are behind.....i just don't want to screw up my system..........i'm not knowledgable to fix stuff........especially if my computer isn't working........so,WHY DO I GET UPDATES FOR APPLICATIONS I DON'T HAVE?

If you have no kde applications, Update Manger shouldn't receive any kde updates.

To find out what updates were installed recently run the following command in Terminal:
sudo grep "Setting up" /var/log/apt/term.log
Post the output here.

To check if you have some kde packages installed open Terminal and enter:
sudo dpkg -l | grep kde
Post the output here.

i think i'm still getting updates for Evolution.........i got rid of that program, or so i thought, i don't use it.

You have two kde libraries: kdelibs-data, kdelibs4c2a (Some applications might have installed these libraries as dependencies). That's why you had kde updates (but only of those two libraries).

To find out what evolution libraries are installed run the following command:
sudo dpkg -l | grep evolution

You can uninstall Evolution, but you must be careful not to break your system. Some of the attached libraries for evolution are deeply embedded in the system and removing them will break many gnome applications. If you still want to uninstall Evolution, see http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=395199 and http://linux.derkeiler.com/Mailing-Lists/Ubuntu/2008-04/msg03149.html

For me everything looks normal. How many megabytes of updates have you been receiving daily? Once I had 100Mb of updates, but it was only once. Usually I get 2-20Mb per day, but sometimes up to 60Mb.

How did you screw your os? Or the updates screwed your system? Can you give me more details about it? Maybe I can help you out.

here i am back again........thanx for being here.........i don't know, i did the updates & also removed some evolution stuff......really messed things up. now....i reinstalled ubuntu 8.04____new system now. itried to use the add/remove to get rid of evolution and it won't allow me to! don't understand this. i thought that was the easy way to do it..........i used synaptic before. i think that's how i screwed things up. now i have to try getting my wireless working again and all that stuff........when my newly installed os started i had 195 updates to load.........i went ahead and installed all of them. the reasoin i wanted to get rid of evolution is because it was conflicking with something else, can't think what at the moment.

It must have been removing the Evolution libraries that screwed your system. You can't remove Evolution through Add/Remove... because some of the Evolution libraries are embedded in the system and removing them will break your system (for more information, read the links I mentioned before).

You shouldn't have reinstalled ubuntu from scratch, we could have found some solution to fix it, like installing evolution in recovery mode or reinstalling ubuntu-desktop.

There's no easy way to get rid Evolution. I tried removing all Evolution libraries except "evolution-data-server" and "evolution-data-server-common". My system is still alive =) But I'm not sure it's a 100% safe solution.
