It is possible that the .iso file you downloaded was corrupted.

It is possible to can use the MD5 checksums to verify the validity of the downloaded file but I would suggest you try burning the CD again or else try downloading again if you have the bandwidth.

Another option for you might be to download the "Alternate" CD by checking the checkbox on the download page.
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

This Alternate cd does not run the Live Ubuntu desktop (i.e. directly from CD) but is more likely to install on a range of different hardware.
