Cannot mount volume

I have a ethereal 120 gig that when i plug in ubuntu gives me the Cannot mount volume error, it gives me nice little choices, choice 1 being nonsense but choice 2 telling me a to input a command line to force mount it.?
when i input the command it says "only root can do that" so basicly i want to know how to become root (lol?)
plz help

P.S or if there is some sort of little ubuntu program that can do all this for me quick and ez ill like to know where to get that.

P.S.S i am TOTAL NOOB to this ubuntu OS and linux or w/e the heck it is

Please try this first...

If you are tring to mount a NTFS (win XP) formatted partition please using Win force an hard-disk check on it...

Hi Steve,
to give a command as root please type sudo and_then_the_command
Password for Steve xxxxxx
##please note you wont see any stars or alike, you will type blind.
Caution: with sudo you should know what you do, otherwise you can harm your system.
